This picture is the larger camp separate from the familiar infamous sign at the entrance of the other camp (which used to be Polish military barracks before the Nazis took it). This picture is Auschwitz-Birkenau, mostly composed of hundreds of chimney stacks where crude wooden sheds held the many prisoners. Part of a nearby town was destroyed to build Birkenau. A plague I found a few years ago in one o the blocks read, "He who does not remember history is bound to live through it again." - George Santayana To visit Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau is a sobering experience.
