"The Last Ride"
Sarah stared at her reflection in the rearview mirror of the police cruiser, her hands trembling on the steering wheel. In the back seat, through the partition, she could see David's bewildered expression, his wrists still bound in his own handcuffs.
"Have you completely lost your mind?" he called out, but there was something else in his voice beneath the shock – was it admiration?
"Twenty-three years of marriage," she replied, accelerating onto the highway, "and you never once let me drive your patrol car. I figured if you were going to arrest me for that expired parking ticket, I might as well earn it."
The absurdity of the situation hit them both at once. David's stern police officer facade cracked, and a laugh escaped despite his best efforts to maintain his professional demeanor. It would be a long time before his fellow officers let him live this one down at the precinct.
As the sirens wailed in the distance, Sarah smiled. It wasn't exactly the anniversary celebration she'd planned, but it would certainly be one they'd never forget.
